On a lovely spring day in October the Kiwanis Club of Westside Hamilton held a pampering day for Mums of children with life threatening illnesses. These Mothers don’t get a lot of time for themselves because of the needs of both their seriously unwell child as well as their other children.
It was a very successful day …well beyond our expectations. The Mums were so happy and enjoyed every minute. They were a bit unsure of how the day would go and for some it was the first time they had left their babies/children since they were born. Each Mum had a unique story to tell but they were all over whelmed to find that there were other Mums that fully understood how they felt. It as a joy to see them chatter away and find common ground.
The day started at the WINTEC beauticians training centre where students and their tutor had come in specially to give facials, pedicures, manicures, eyebrow tints to our Mums at no cost. Such a generous gesture.
This day had been organise by Rhian, one of our members, who provided morning tea with yummy muffins and a slice to die for. The ladies almost went to sleep during the face massage and facial time. Lots of introductions and exchange of ideas happened while they waited their turn.
Then off we went out to the Clydesdale café at Pirongia for lunch. Here they were treated to a buggy ride behind a team of Clydesdale horses. There was also a market day and hot rod display to entertain us while we waited for our meal. This consisted of hot glazed ham with several salads followed by tea/coffee and brownies.
Because of the market day we were a little late returning but all agreed that it had been a fantastic day.
The final surprise was the goody bags for them to take with them containing a cup and saucer and a variety of teas/coffee/chocolates.
A comment from one of the Mums:
“Where do I start? Thank you so much for the pampering treat on Saturday. I am pretty sure that it was the most relaxed I have felt in over four years. It was just perfect and I am so grateful. And talk about exceeding expectations! The pampering was so lovely and then to be taken all the way to the Pirongia Clydesdales, was just fantastic. The small group worked really well and it was really nice to be able to talk and share stories. I had the best day ever and it was also good to unwind and take a deep breathe before the school holidays.
Thank you!! You guys rock!”
We hope to make this an annual event.
