Lake Rotoma Swim

The Kiwanis Lake Rotoma Swim is held each Waitangi Day.  The swim has been run annually on Waitangi Day since 1979 with 20 events open to all ages and abilities with events ranging in distance from 100m – 15km.

Swimmers wear colour coded Kiwanis caps so the participants in the several races that occur at the same time can be identified.  Power boat support as well as a number of kayaks are provided for swimmer safety and course monitoring.

The course is the only buoyed barrage swim course in the world with a 1500m rope suspended below the lake surface by orange buoys and droppers every 10m.  Larger buoys mark the corners and finish line.  The course is triangular and has legs of 550m, 550m, and 400m.  First place in each race receives a medal, with both wetsuit and non-wetsuit class categories.

For 2015 – 2016 The Lake Rotoma Swim will be one of  3 events staged on the Rotorua Lakes. Complete all three events and receive a Famously Rotorua “Swim the Lakes” Tshirt. The other events will be held on 25/26 January at the Blue Lake and on 16 March at Lake Okataina.

NAPIER CLUB  helps maintain the Fragrant garden near the Kennedy Park Rose Gardens.

This garden was established in 1978 after funds were raised to build a garden where the blind could come and smell the fragrant plants.  The club won an international award for this project and had 12 members at the time.
